The best cycling routes from Terchová

A varied loop through the countryside around Terchová, combining paved roads, field tracks and forest roads with longer climbs, descents and scenic views. It is not extremely long, but the elevation gain will test your fitness – which is exactly why it is an excellent route for a mountain e-bike.

The route starts at Panská Lúka and follows paved roads through parts of Terchová to Vyšní Repáňovci, where the loop itself begins. We recommend riding towards Šípková, as the climbs are slightly more gradual in this direction.

From Šípková, the route climbs gradually as the pavement gives way to a forest road. It continues through Smrekovci over rolling terrain below Pupov, followed by more open sections with views and a descent into Zázrivá – Dolina.

From Zázrivá, another longer forest-road climb follows. The reward is a scenic rest spot with a bench. From there, the route continues towards Kýčerka and then over rolling terrain to Kováčka.

From Kováčka, the profile is mostly downhill through Šmehýlovci back to Vyšní Repáňovci and then to Terchová. The surface is mixed: pavement, field tracks and forest roads.

A longer but gently profiled e-bike loop connecting Terchová with Žilina, Budatín Castle and cycle sections along the Váh River and Žilina Water Reservoir. Thanks to the low elevation gain, it is suitable for recreational e-bike riders who want a longer day out without sustained mountain climbing.

From Terchová, ride through Belá towards Žilina. The opening section has a gentle profile and can be ridden at a comfortable pace on an e-bike. After arriving in Žilina, the main destination of the first half of the trip is Budatín Castle, a good place for a short break.

From Budatín, the route continues towards the Váh River and the cycling sections around Žilina Water Reservoir. This is one of the calmest parts of the loop and has a noticeably different character from the mountain routes directly around Terchová.

Near Varín, the route turns back towards Terchová. The return passes through villages below Malá Fatra and gradually returns to hillier terrain. The overall elevation gain remains low, but a distance of more than fifty kilometres still requires enough time and a reasonable level of fitness.

E-bike tip: this route is well suited to a full-day rental, especially for riders who prefer covering a longer distance rather than tackling steep climbs. Most of the trip follows paved roads and cycle routes, so it is also suitable for riders who prefer less technical terrain.

A moderately demanding mountain e-bike loop from Terchová towards the Kysuce region and the Nová Bystrica Reservoir. Over roughly 52 kilometres you will climb more than 1,000 vertical metres and visit the quiet mountain areas of Harvelka and Riečnica, as well as one of the most beautifully situated reservoirs in Kysuce.

From Terchová, head towards the Kysuce region and gradually gain elevation. The route has a distinctly mountainous character, alternating longer climbs, descents and quieter sections away from busy roads. It is therefore best suited to riders who already have some experience with longer e-bike trips.

Around Nová Bystrica, continue towards Harvelka and the area of the former village of Riečnica. This is a quieter part of the ride, surrounded by the forests and hills of Kysuce, where you can fully enjoy the mountain setting away from urban traffic.

One of the highlights of the route is Vodná nádrž Nová Bystrica. The area around the reservoir offers attractive views and is a good place for a longer break before heading back to Terchová.

The return includes further rolling and climbing sections, so the total elevation gain should not be underestimated. Although this route is shorter than the large loop via Oravská Lesná, more than 1,000 vertical metres still make it a proper full-day mountain ride.

E-bike tip: we recommend a full-day rental and sensible use of motor assistance. Use stronger support on longer climbs, but save battery on flat and gentle sections so you have enough reserve for the return to Terchová.

A full-day e-bike loop for riders who want to connect Terchová, Kysuce and Orava in a single trip. The route is more than 70 kilometres long, gains over 1,100 vertical metres and includes the Slovak Astronomical Clock in Stará Bystrica, the mountain scenery of Oravská Lesná and a return through Zázrivá.

From Terchová, the route crosses hilly countryside towards Lutiše and then continues to Stará Bystrica. The first major highlight comes right in the village centre – the Slovak Astronomical Clock is one of the best-known attractions in Kysuce and a natural place for the first longer break.

From Stará Bystrica, the ride continues through the Kysuce countryside towards Oravská Lesná. The profile is rolling, with longer climbs appearing gradually. An e-bike makes this section considerably easier, but given the total distance it is important to conserve battery and avoid using maximum assistance throughout the entire ride.

Oravská Lesná lies in a mountain setting on the border of the Kysuce and Orava regions. The route then continues towards Zázrivá, and the section between Oravská Lesná and Zázrivá is among the most mountainous parts of the entire loop.

From Zázrivá, return towards Terchová. After more than fifty kilometres, the final section is mainly about maintaining a sensible pace and keeping enough battery in reserve. For this route we recommend a full-day rental, plenty of water and a planned food stop.

E-bike tip: on a route of around 73 km with more than 1,100 m of elevation gain, battery range depends heavily on rider weight, assistance level, surface and weather. To keep a reserve for the final climbs, use stronger assistance mainly where you really need it.

A distinctly mountainous e-bike loop from Terchová through Zázrivá to the Kubínska hoľa area. The route is around 54 kilometres long, but the key figure is more than 1,600 vertical metres of climbing. This makes it one of the most demanding routes in the selection and best suited to experienced riders planning a full-day trip.

From Terchová, head towards Zázrivá and continue into the mountain terrain below Kubínska hoľa. The profile gradually changes from a gentler warm-up into long climbs that form the main challenge of the route. An e-bike makes the climbing more manageable, but the total elevation gain means higher battery consumption should be expected.

The highest part of the ride leads into the area of Kubínska hoľa. This is a good place to plan a longer break. After the demanding climb, a descent back towards Zázrivá provides a welcome change of pace and the mountain atmosphere of Orava.

From Zázrivá – Dolina the loop continues through Pofany and then back to Terchová. The final section should not be underestimated either – after more than 1,600 vertical metres, it is wise to keep some energy and battery capacity in reserve for the last kilometres.

The surface varies between pavement and firm mountain or forest roads. We recommend riding this route in stable weather and only if you have experience with longer mountain rides. Some sections can become noticeably more difficult when wet.

E-bike tip: with around 1,680 m of elevation gain, use maximum assistance only on the steepest sections. On gentler parts, switch to a more economical mode so you have enough battery reserve for the entire loop.

A demanding mountain e-bike loop connecting Terchová with the quiet roads through Lutiše, Horný Vadičov and scenic Straník. The route is just under 50 kilometres long but gains more than 1,100 vertical metres, making it a good choice for riders who want a combination of longer climbs, rolling terrain and beautiful views over the countryside north of Žilina.

From Terchová, head towards Lutiše. The opening section already gains elevation gradually and prepares you for the mountainous character of the entire loop. Traffic is quieter away from the main roads, and the ride passes through typical scattered hillside settlements.

From Lutiše, the route continues to Horný Vadičov. The profile remains rolling, alternating longer climbs with shorter descents. This is a good section to use e-bike assistance economically, as the biggest climbs are still ahead.

The main destination of the ride is Straník above Žilina. The area is known for its open views over the Žilina Basin and surrounding mountain ranges and is a natural place for a longer break before returning to Terchová.

The final section returns over rolling terrain towards Terchová. Although the route is not extremely long, more than 1,100 m of total climbing places it firmly among the difficult loops. We recommend a full-day rental and keeping enough battery in reserve.

E-bike tip: save stronger assistance mainly for the longer climbs towards Straník. Use a more economical mode on transfer and gentler sections so you have a comfortable battery reserve for the entire return to Terchová.
